Five Japanese Firms to Launch VOD Service for FPD TVs

As a follow-up to an Asia Express dated October 13, 2006, TV Portal Service, a joint venture formed by Sony, Matsushita, Sharp, Hitachi, and Toshiba, plans to launch an Internet VOD (Video On Demand) service for FPD (Flat Panel Display) TVs, according to a Nikkei report. Currently, TV Portal Service has already been delivering services based on text and still pictures. Starting in fall 2007, TV Portal Service plans to add a video library of approximately 2,000 video titles, including movies, music videos, foreign TV dramas, and cartoon. By fiscal 2008, which will start in April 2008, subscribers will be able to download TV programs to their TVs without accessing the video library.
